At the beginning of each session of Parliament, a ballot is drawn in the House of Commons which decides which twenty MPs will be able to introduce a ballot bill, a type of Private Members’ Bill which has the best chance of becoming law. This short briefing gives an overview of how the ballot works, how the order of the ballot influences a bill’s chances of success, and how MPs decide on the topic for their bill.
